And then what? It wouldn't benefit anyone to just stay here until we all die, which doesn't seem to be the case given the provision of mediocre-but-serviceable beds and food.

They've not only chosen to allow over three dozen people to roam around, several of which are very capable of physical resistance, and even returned us personal items.
