Well... I guess the first thing is that the entire reason the time layer had died was because in the past, humans kept time-traveling and rewriting history so much that time became unstable. Basically the world collapsed because its "threads" were falling apart. [a beat] Oh, you can think of threads as like... the manifestations of bonds, whether it's relationships between people, cause and effect between events, etc.
Anyway, they weren't there in the memory because I'd sort of temporarily banished them, but there are these beings called the Phantoms. I've mentioned them before, I think... They're not really living beings, as so much as they're a mass of wills, who exist outside of time and are attached to the time layer only through repeated interference with it. They're also really obsessed with destroying the world.

We tricked them into trying to take over Goddess-me, but then she reversed it on them and used her power to turn them into threads. So with that, we finally had enough threads that the world could be stabilized again, rather than just barely holding on by Goddess-me keeping it together with the few she had to work with.
